While not a life insurance product, I think it is worth mentioning about the other two more popular types of insurance. Instead of paying a death benefit, critical illness insurance and disability insurance pay a living benefit.

Critical illness (CI) insurance was developed by a South African doctor in the early 1980s after he was alarmed that while many of his patients had standard life insurance, it was of no use to them if they had a heart attack and survived. Critical illness insurance will pay a lump sum benefit should you be diagnosed with a serious illness or condition and survive a set time frame (usually one month). The big three conditions are heart attack, stroke and cancer but some insurance companies add additional 18 20 conditions under their plans (leukemia, severe burns, loss of limbs). CI application forms are very similar to their life insurance counterparts, the biggest difference being that a far greater weight is placed on you immediate familys health history. The insurance company needs to know if there is a history of heart attack or other diseases to determine your eligibility for this type of insurance.

It is vitally important to read and understand the definitions of all of these illnesses, as some of them can be very technical. Also you will have additional riders (add-ons), that you can select when you sign up for this type of insurance the most popular being the return of premium rider (ROP). If you select the return of premium rider, you will be able to have all (or a portion) of your premiums refunded to you, if you have not collected on the policy over a specific timeframe.

Disability insurance will pay a monthly benefit while you are disabled and cannot work or perform your regular duties. This type of insurance while not complicated does have a tremendous amount variation. Firstly the monthly benefit that is paid to you generally cannot exceed 66% of your current salary; you will need to wait a specific waiting period before you collect the benefit, the benefit can last for two or five years or until you reach age 65. All of these factors will determine how much you monthly premiums will cost.

There will be additional riders (add-ons) that you will need to consider at the time of application. You can select a return of premium rider (as described above), a future needs rider (you have the option to get more money as you age and salary increases), a cost of living rider (the benefit is increased with inflation), an own occupation rider (you cannot perform your job but can you work elsewhere?).

As you can see there are plenty of variations with both of these types of insurance and you should discuss the availability and other factors with your broker.

While your doctor may think that you should lose 50 pounds to meet his goal you may actually only need to lose 10 pounds. Never risk losing muscle to attain a specific weight.

- Set realistic goals. Anyone who has ever set an unrealistic weight loss goal will tell you that not meeting your own expectations is the fastest way to fail at weight loss. You should plan to lose no more than 1-2 pounds per week. In general, people who set realistic goals will exceed it during at least the first few weeks. Exceeding your weight loss goals will give you something to get excited about, and keep the weight loss process positive.

- Join a program. Weight loss groups like Weight Watchers are popular for more than just their diet plans. They help people to form a community with other people who have the same goals. This extended support network is great for making weight loss more exciting having someone with whom you can share your excitement. It is also a great way to talk through some of the issues that you might be experiencing with your weight loss program. Support is crucial when you are attempting to make major lifestyle changes.

I heard a shotgun blast. I must have been hit because I was down and felt it in my stomach. I was lying on the ground of a parking lot in the dark scared, hurt and alone, not knowing if I would live or die. It seemed so real, even though it was a dream.

This dream, after my father died, helped me understand the shock and physical hurt I was going through. I had never experienced the loss of someone I loved and it hit me in the gut. It was as if a part of me had died. And it had. Especially the part of me who reserved things like dying for other families, not mine.

I was alone in the uncharted territory of grief. I wasnt interested in watching television or reading a novel.

Interestingly, I enjoyed playing the piano, as unpracticed as I was. Usually Id be too busy to sit down and play; but now time didnt seem to matter. I remember calling a friend whose husband said she was kayaking and would be spending the night camping on an island. I wondered if I would ever get out there again, back into the world. It was as if I was suspended in an altered state of being.

I couldnt write about my fathers death for a long time. To write about something gives me distance; it keeps me in my head. As long as I didnt write about my father dying, there was no distance. It was still happening in me. Like in my dream, I needed to stay in my body; to feel the loss in my flesh and blood my bones.

I soon began to receive and experience the incredible healing power of love. It came mysteriously; it was an honest outpouring from the people who surrounded me, wrote letters and called. One expression of sympathy I will always remember came from my friend Diana who lost her mother to breast cancer when she was a teenager. Soon after we returned home from Dads funeral there was a knock at the door. There, Diana stood holding the most beautiful bouquet of flowers: delphiniums, sunflowers and zinnias. She put her hand over her heart and said two words, My mother. We didnt need to talk. I knew she was telling me about the love that lives on.

Another friend called.

Ann said I want to take you to lunch. I will never forget when my father died.

It didnt matter that Ann was in her 80s or that she had lost two husbands after long 30-year marriages. It didnt matter how many years had passed since her dad had died. She knew how I was feeling and wanted to share this time with me.

During this time, my tears would come as easily as the memories of Dad. I believe tears are like holy water. They flow from the well of our hearts, where we hold our feelings. I stayed with my sadness. I shared it with others and received great comfort because they too have had sadness.

My mother said she gardened with her grief. Her yard was never more beautiful than the year my father died. This time of grieving, as it gradually left my body, gave me a new way of living; it became my traveling companion as I lived more compassionately. I learned that our sadness ennobles us as humans. It means we have loved deeply. It is this love that will never die. I wrote about this in a poem the summer after my Dad died.

MY FATHER

I think I am letting him go.
It is not that my love is diminished
or that I miss him less.

It is only that the sun is up
and there is no milk
in the refrigerator
and the bunny got out
of the cage
and is eating my red geraniums.

I think I am letting him go.
But sometimes at night
before I go to sleep
I feel the tears
fill up my eyes
and run down my cheeks.

I do not think I will ever
let him go.
But he is gone.
